Information is presented on methods for assessing traction machine performance for their selection as all- and hybrid-electric vehicle drives. The suitability of permanent magnet drives is discussed together with post assembly magnetisation as a technique for reducing cost in volume manufacture. A representative 70 kW (peak) brushless permanent magnet traction machine is presented with some discussion of its performance and fault tolerance. (6 pages)
