The overall integrity of in-vehicle systems which contain electronic components is dependent on three main groups of components, the vehicle sensors, which may be either electronic in nature (e.g. temperature sensors) or electromechanical (e.g. throttle position), the actuators which will be largely electromechanical (e.g. hydraulic modulator), and the interconnected ECU's around the vehicle. A typical structure incorporating these is shown. From an integrity point of view each ECU may be subdivided into hardware and software functions even though the two interact to achieve the system function. The hardware functions can be subdivided further into discrete components (pull-up resistors, power drivers etc.), the ECU processor and a block of logic elements. The introduction of BiCMOS technology permits all the ancillary logic functions not contained within the ECU processor in use, for example watchdog timer, sample rate clock, communications interfaces, actuator drivers and multiplexers, to be interpreted in one of the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) forms.
