Space Data Network (SDN) is a conceptual network, which extends form ground via relay satellites to spacecraft. Due to the heterogeneity of the employed network technologies and the needs of spacecraft operation it provides a serious technological challenge in the fields of Interconnection of Transmission Sysems, Network & Service Managment, and Uplink Data Control. This paper gives an introduction to the concept and rationale of SDN.
