The railway traffic control systems conventionally introduced for the purpose of upgrading the control and monitoring functions of individual systems are now pursuing the enhancement of efficient operations and passenger services. Through the integration of relevant subsystems in addition to the development of control technology by computers, information processing technology, including knowledge processing and the development of communication network technology, have also been incorporated. The systematization of functions responding to information-oriented activites such as traffic planning, operation arrangement, and information services for which the systematization was delayed conventionally are integrated in the system. As a result, a new control and information integration technology is being developed which will organically combine the information processing technology and communication network technology that mainly consists of knowledge engineering contrasting to the conventional control technology now in use.
