Amid the information age, the railway companies are striving to streamline their operations through integration of information and control and to improve the efficiency and safety of their total systems. Such improvements include: the savings of energy and manpower, the minimization of down time, and the improvement of maintenance efficiency and passenger service, etc., as major targets. To respond to these goals, Hitachi developed an on-board train information control system and delivered it to the Tokyo Municipal Subway No. 12 Line for Bureau of Transportation, Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This system controls the entire train information network and permits required information to be obtained and transmitted freely and conveniently. This has made it possible to build an intelligence-intensive car and railway system in which all constituent elements are organically linked together.
