Japan Freight Railway Company is promoting the development of the next generation of high power electric locomotives. These locomotives will be able to travel at higher speed, pull longer and larger freight trains, and have much lower maintenance costs. Hitachi, Ltd. has gone ahead with the design and manufacture of the EF200 type 6-axle DC prototype electric locomotive. The major feature of the EF200 type is that it is a high power locomotive with an output of 6000 kW, making it one of the largest locomotives in the world. This power is achieved through use of a 3-phase asynchronous motor supplying 1000 kW per axle. In addition, the EF 200 utilizes various new technologies not found on conventional locomotives. Much is expected of this next-generation electric locomotive.
