An integral part of most major weapon systems is some form of a very complete technology. This utilization and its complexity are presenting the Department of Defence Test and Evaluation with major performance evaluation challenges. These challenges will require the utilization of complementary computer models and simulations (M/S) with testing. To effectively complement testing, it is necessary that the methodology for employing M/S with testing be clearly understood throughout the life cycle of the weapon system. Also, there are four basic M/S characteristics which will require special attention during the development and utilization of the M/S capabiity. These characterics are: (1) Degree of Representation, (2) Practically, (3) Validation and (4) Configuration control. These characteristics will need to receive top priority at all times if M/S is to become a complementary tool for the DoD T and E communities.
