On August 7, 1985 the City of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas People Mover Corporation entered into a written agreement for the implementation of the Las Vegas People Mover System. The longtime idea of having a more effective public transit system in the Las Vegas area came a step closer to reality when the City founded a People Mover Task Force within the framework of a Downtown Development Plan. This Plan had the objective of substantially improving the Downtown area and therewith enhance business. Magnetic transit of America, Inc. (MTA) and Daniel, Mann, Johnson, and Mendenhall (DMJM) joined forces to respond to the Request for Proposal published by the city in the late 1984. The MTA/DMJM team was selected in January 1985 to build and operate the Las Vegas People Mover System, without direct cost to the City. The basis of this System is the M-Bahn magnetic levitation public transit system, for which MTA has the exclusive license for USA, Canada and Taiwan.
