The selection of a 20 kHz power system for Space Station has generated a need for 20 kHz to dc and low frequency ac load converters. These converters are necessary to supply power to the previously designed 28 V dc loads, 400 Hz motor loads, and other low voltage dc loads common in spacecraft applications. Straight forward converter techniques such as simple transformer-rectified-filters and line comutating schemes produce untolerable EMC for spacecraft use if not properly designed. This paper will discuss some basic design techniques for building 20 kHz load converters. One of the most critical stages of the 20 kHz load converters are the input filters. Discussions of the various input filter topologies include the breadboard and analytical results.
