The 'standard' dynamic input range for switched mode power supplies is 1.5 to 1, this corresponds to an input with a variation of plus/minus 20 %, about normal. Reducing the dynamic range to less than this produces only limited benefits. This range covers most standard sources. There are applications that require operation from a source which is not so stable. This can be due to extreme worst-casing, as in MIL-STD-704 or a desire to operate from more than one nominal source voltage. It is these applications that are normally considered 'wide range' inputs and result in input variations that are approximately 3 to 1. This is twice the range of a standard power supply and a penalty is usually incurred in terms of size or efficiency. An instance of extreme 'wide range' occurs in aircraft power supplies that are powered from a Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG). A dedicated PMG is used to produce a highly reliable power source for flight critical electronics in some aircraft. The high reliability of this source comes from the fact that the permament magnet rotor is mounted on an overhung gear shaft. The winding is then mounted around this rotor. This produces a power source with no additional bearings or wearing parts over the engine without the alternator. By dedicating the winding to a single load, load faults that could interrupt power are eliminated. Fuses, with their inherent unreliability, are eliminated by winding the stator with flux paths that produce a large effective series inductance. This inductance limits the maximum currents to a safe value.
