New Zealand Railways Corporation are in the process of electrifying the central mountainous portion of the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT). The NIMT, which connects the cities of Wellington and Auckland, carries about 40 % of NZRC total tonnage. The ruling grade is 1 in 50 with uncompensated curves of 150 metre radius.
