Over the coming months contracts totalling some dollarNZ200m will be placed for locomotives, catenary, power supply, signalling, communications and civil works needed to energise 408 route-km between Palmerston North and Hamilton at 25 kV 50 Hz. Although New Zealand Railways is extending the 1.5 kV DC Wellington suburban network and taking delivery of new trains, savings offered by high-voltage AC were so substantial that the possible complications of dual-system operation at some future date have been accepted.
