Recently, the use of a microprocessor has been advancing in very vital areas. A railway signalling system is a typical one. JNR has developed a solid-state interlocking system which controls signals and points, and ensures train runs at a station. This system is named SMILE (safe multiprocessor system for interlocking equipment). The requirement for SMILE differs depending on whether the site is a large-scale station with a complicated shunting work or a small station with a simple track layout. To cope with this requirement and to make the overall system economical, we adopt two types of SMILE architectures; SMILE and micro-SMILE. The former incorporates such various automated functions as train route control and passenger information supply in addition to interlocking function, while the latter basically consists of an interlocking function. Both systems are superior to the conventional relay interlocking system in terms of operation, maintenance, economy and flexibility. The first system of SMILE was put into practical service at Higashi-kanagawa station in March, 1985 and 10 sets of them have been operating in JNR. Micro-SMILE has also been operating at three stations since February 1986.
