The paper reviews some of the techniques available to the designer of safety-critical systems and describes their application to the complex engineering requirements of main-line railway signalling in the form of British Rail's solid-state interlocking (SSI). The design of central interlocking and track-side interface equipment is described in terms of the redundancy techniques used and the organization of their hardware and software.
