In order to satisfy the requirements of increasingly intensive services but with the optimisation of rolling stock, closer headways and achieving economy in the use of electrical energy, many Transit Authorities are adopting Automatic Train Control. This paper describes how the microprocessor is used to satisfy the demanding safety and operational requirements and describes systems that are, in part, already in passenger service in Barcelona and, as a total system package, are being installed in Singapore.
