In order to introduce a guided transportation system in a central business district, freedom on line profile and acceptability of a surrounding area is very important. For this purpose, ability of quiet and stable running at sharp curves and steep gradient better than that of ordinary railway is necessary; this is the reason why rubber tyred new transit systems are being introduced successively in Japan and France since 1981 when the world first fully automated metro was put into service in Kobe. Experience has shown that the rubber tyred system was successful at the above-mentioned points but not satisfactory in tyre wear and relating difficulty in maintenance, energy consumption and riding quality. To cope with these problems, a new concept of non-adhesive railway using linear motors for propulsion and braking, and conventional rails and wheels for suspension and guidance was proposed. This paper deals with the way of Japanese development and the present status.
