Phase angle control of thyristor converters is well established as an alternative to transformer tap changers and diode rectifiers for dc motor drives on ac supplied railways. By its very nature phase angle control causes the ac supply current to be discontinuous and lag behind the supply voltage. This produces relatively poor power factor and high harmonic content during acceleration and can result in harmonic resonance of the supply voltage. The effect of harmonic currents on nearby telephone cables is measured by the psophometric current. The paper reviews various design techniques which can be employed to reduce psophometric current and examines their effect on the power factor.
