This paper presents the Switched Reluctance (SR) Drive as an alternative brushless system which combines a very simple motor with an economic power converter which provides a high performance drive having a high overall efficiency and very flexible control characteristics. The 651 Tramcar project has clearly demonstrated the suitability of SR Drives as electric propulsion systems on rail traction schemes. This experience together with the earlier work on Battery electric vehicles has put the technical viability of the system beyond doubt. The SR Drive is already finding considerable use in the industrial drives field, in high volume fractional and integral horsepower applications and in specialist areas such as mining equipment. The author foresees further development, at higher power levels, generating similarly impressive results and expects the SR Drive to make a significant impact in the area of light rail traction over the next decade. The continuing improvement and availability of high voltage power semiconductors, (particularly the GTO thyristor which is well suited to the peak to mean current requirement of the drive) and the development of integrated control circuits should combine to further increase the potential of SR Drives in this field.
