Contrary to beliefs widely expressed a few years ago, it has been shown that SR drives are capable of providing, in particularly robust forms, the highest levels of performance over a very wide range of specifications. Users are already reporting favourably on the attributes of the drive, including overall performance and efficiency at part loads. These levels of performance can only be achieved by a degree of integration of motor and converter design not commonly found in the drives industry. Compared to its better established competitors, the SR drive is very new, with many ideas yet to be developed and much refinement of technology to be undertaken before it can be considered to have approached its full potential. Further, the advent of new and improved electronic devices, for both power handling and control, is constantly extending its capabilities. These technological developments are considered to be particularly beneficial for the future of SR systems in view of the division of costs between the more expensive converter and the simpler motor.
