Tendencies of the introducing energy storage devices and hybrid drives on railways are quite clear, particularly in the context of American and Japanese achievements on this field. It is easy to find technical information about another railway, metro and tram operators introducing or planning to introduce alternative drives. Main European railway vehicle manufacturers (Alstom, Bombardier and other) also conduct intensive research and construction works, leading to implementation of hybrid drives to the operational practice. Information about introducing new alternative drives also come from the manufacturers of trams - some test of the hybrid tram equipped with the ultracapacitor storage device were conducted several years ago in Warsaw. The tests proved the possibility to use tramway on the short non-electrified segments of the line with the length of a few kilometers. The development of systems using the accumulation of energy in rail transportation seems to be inevitable in the face of energy prices grow and improvement of the parameters of the energy storage devices.
