The significance and popularity of electric vehicles is steadily increasing. Often synthetic sounds are discussed in the context of vehicle exterior noise and pedestrian safety. However opportunities and implications concerning synthetic sounds for vehicle interior noise are rarely systematically investigated. It is necessary to seek for valid data revealing which sound concepts will be accepted by consumers. There is great uncertainty of how synthetic driving noises m the interior of electric vehicles should be assessed. Moreover, there are not many potential customers who have previous experience with the new technology. In the present study exemplary sound schemes have been developed covering potential approaches for driving noises in electric vehicles and to be evaluated with respect to consumer experience and acceptance. Furthermore, the chosen procedure guaranteed the needed ecological validity for this kind of tests. Results of our study have shown that synthetic sound will not automatically lead to better assessment or even acceptance. In the course of this study, there was e. g. one synthetic driving sound that was commented positively and received best ratings due to its inconspicuous character and selective load sensitivity. By contrast, application of other synthetic driving sounds did not foster positive m-situ ratings or annotations. The paper will present the context-sensitive procedure, developed sound concepts and consumer reactions. Moreover, it will discuss the applied strategies of the consumers to assess the new technology. Further results confirm acoustic design does not consist of a set of paradigms, but among others it is an understanding of the balancing mechanisms in an environment.
