With the SMA66x, SMA68x and SMA69x sensors Bosch introduces the sixth generation of high-g acceleration sensors for airbag ECUs and satellite sensors. Key features for the new generation are functional safety concepts for applications in ASIL D airbag systems and the introduction of single-axis az sensors and dual-axes axaz sensors. These sensors communicate with either an SPI or a PSI5 interface and we optimized their design with respect to vibration robustness and overload performance. SMA6 sensors for airbag applications were developed benefiting from our experience with MEMS sensors and with airbag applications. We designed the MEMS element and the signal path according to the acceleration signals, which are present during a real crash. This implied an optimization of measurement range and minimal clipping performance. The sensor can be applied as airbag ECU sensor and as satellite sensor. It can be used in demanding ASIL D airbag systems, even for single sensor system geometries.
