CFD increases continuously its importance in the vehicle development process in parallel to experimental investigations. Considering aerodynamics, development goals like drag, lift, aeroacoustics and thermal management issues can be calculated confidently by today's CFD solvers. Next to these primary aerodynamic development goals, rain water management becomes a significant task, not only on the experimental aspect but also in numerical simulations. Soiling and surface flow of water an the windscreen, signal lamps and headlights, side windows and rear view mirrors can affect the visibility for the driver as well as for other traffic participants and therefore are important safety factors. Due to these facts, it has to be ensured in the vehicle development process that the soiling of safety relevant components stays within acceptable limits. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the spray phenomena of a free rotating full scale wheel, its numerical aerodynamic simulation with PowerFLOW and the corresponding wheel spray simulation during postprocessing. The governing spray boundary conditions were identified under realistic and reproducible boundary conditions in the FKFS Thermal Wind Tunnel with a laser diffraction system. A correlation depending an these boundary conditions was derived and integrated in the post-processing simulation with PowerVIZ. For validation, the wheel spray patterns, experimentally determined by laser light sheets were used.
