The super-speed maglev train was introduced to increase the speed of ground transportation. It levitates magnetically and runs without any wheel. As the maglev train cannot adopt the adhesion drive which is using friction force, rotary traction motors are replaced by the linear synchronous motors (LSM). To propel heavy maglev trains with LSM, large amounts of currents are required and the rating of the power electronics should be increased. However, this makes fast switching impossible and generates thrust ripple so that design of the controller is very difficult. In this paper, current and speed controller of the high power/high rating LSM are designed, and vector control and SVPWM techniques are applied. Simulation based on Matlab/Simulink is also developed to analyze and confirm the control algorithm and controller characteristics.
