In recent years, with attention paid to global environmental problems, exhaust emission regulations of automotive are enforced in each country to prevent air pollution. With the high requirements for continuous improvement of automobile fuel economy and exhaust gas purification rate, the restriction standard tends to become severer. The parts of automobile exhaust system in Europe, United states and Japan have been made of ultra-purity ferritic stainless steels (FSS) for low cost and high properties for example of superior heat resistance, small thermal expansion coefficients and corrosive resistance to meet the requirements for lighter weight and stricter regulations for exhaust gas. This paper introduces the construction of automotive exhaust systems and commonly used stainless steels are introduced and describes ferritic stainless steel development of Baosteel for automotive exhaust system. At present, Baosteel has completed the development involving low chromium and medium chromium ferritic stainless steels which cover the full range of high temperature and low temperature ends. The relevant steels are widely promoted and used in the main car types in domestic joint venture OEMs and the related main parts suppliers. The automobile emission level becomes higher, purifying exhaust emissions, reducing weight of car body, reducing fuel costs and environmental protection will put forward a higher requirement of materials development. The future development trend of the exhaust manifold is the exhaust temperature will continue to rise, so better properties of materials with higher temperature strength and better thermal fatigue properties are needed. In addition, because complex shape of the exhaust manifold, improving formability and making the processing easier are the directions of pursue. For low temperature end materials, the targeted research on corrosion failure behavior of materials should be enhanced in terms of the domestic oil product characteristics (high sulfur content of gasoline, methanol and ethanol gasoline). Now, Baosteel is carrying out the effective evaluation analysis on oils from different areas with General Motors, which could play important roles to further understand the material failure mechanism, improve the material performance and develop the materials of exhaust system components conforms to national conditions of China.
