Most materials for automobile components need to pass the technology and process certifications and to be licensed by automobile plants and components suppliers before being applied. At present, because different producers of automobiles have different certification requirements, it is difficult to get the certification process recognized by one another. Considering that each of the certification tests may take one and a half years or even longer to be finished, it is desirable for automobile producers and assembly purveyors to establish uniform and reliable evaluation procedures and to further promote the establishment of the related standards for the stainless steels for exhaust systems. The present paper introduces the construction of automotive exhaust systems and describes their main failure behaviours and corrosion evaluation procedures.
