Modern car design leads to a severe competition among different material classes. Modern steels have to cope with the demands of the automotive industry in many different fields, e.g. light-weight design, easy manufacturing, cost performance. This paper presents examples of successful developments for different components. For panels new sheet steels like the advanced high strength steels have been introduced, further development options are provided by the high Mn steels. For forged components the improved balance of strength and toughness and the single step processing became possible using precipitation hardened and bainitic steels. For exhaust systems high temperature creep and corrosion behavior has to be controlled in high alloyed austenitic and ferritic stainless steels.
