In 2012, the US Government confirmed the plan for increasing the corporate average fuel economy to a fleet-wide average of 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025. This legislation is representative of the requirements on the global auto industry to deliver vast improvements in powertrain efficiency, as well as, significant reductions in the overall mass of the vehicles. In the area of body structure and closure panels, this will require substantial changes in sheet materials. Some of this demand for automotive lightweighting will be met with lower density materials such as aluminum alloys and polymer composites. However, steel sheet will remain an essential part of the body structure strategy to maintain safety and meet new fuel economy targets. Increased use of newer generation advanced high strength steels, including press hardened steels, will be a key element of this strategy. This paper will review current global automotive market trends as it relates to body structure components. An emphasis will be placed on the increased use of press hardened steels, and the many challenges this increase brings including: new coatings for corrosion prevention, a rapidly expanding supply base, and applications that delve deeper into critical body structure applications.
