The European Union has set up a high goal for the automotive industry by restricting the CO2-emissions to an average fleet value of 120g CO2/km by the year 2012 (1). Weight reduction is one of the various approaches to this goal. More and more steel structures are substituted by die cast aluminium components ('space frame technology'). Casting these new components is a great technological challenge not only for the die caster, but also for the die maker and hot-work tool steel producer. The traditionally well known hotwork tool steels do not always provide the required profile of properties in order to secure an economic production. Kind & Co has developed three special hot-work tool steels with optimized properties: TQ 1, HP 1, and HTR. The report will describe their properties as well as their potential to improve the casting process. The dies not only require extremely large vacuum hardening furnaces, they also need furnaces with a great quenching capacity. As Kind & Co is not only supplier of hot-work tool steels but also operates a modern vacuum heat treatment shop, the company set up one of the largest vacuum hardening furnaces in Europe. The report also describes the experience with this equipment and shows the possibilities for a modern heat treatment of die casting dies.
