The development of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) is frequently discussed. Almost every car manufacturer has started mass production in the last years. There are several different concepts of HEVs - e.g. the differentiation of parallel and series hybrid vehicles is wellknown. Furthermore, the classification of micro, mild, and full HEVs is often used. Nevertheless, researchers all over the world are looking for a uniform procedure used for configuring the power train at an early stage of the design process of HEVs. The simulation is able to run several driving cycles and to calculate the vehicle's fuel consumption. Furthermore, the vehicle properties can be defined by the user as initial values. The scalable models are used as additional degrees of freedom during the power train design process. Finally, the scalability of the full vehicle simulation is used by an optimization algorithm that outputs the optimum power train configuration under the given constraints. Using the described tool it is possible to get information about influences and trends during the design process of parallel hybrid electric vehicles very quickly. In doing so, the simulation system is a possible tool handling the preliminary design of electrified power trains. In the near future several extensions will be made to improve the simulation tool and to make it applicable. On the one hand the model library will be enlarged by adding further engine (e.g. diesel) and transmission types as well as electrical machine types (e.g. permanent magnet synchronous machine) and storage types (e.g. lithium iron phosphate). On the other hand the applicable power train topology will be completed by series hybrid electric and pure electric power trains. Closing, the optimization algorithm will be upgraded to a multi-criteria optimization.
