A useful classification of power train configurations can be made by conventional power trains, including the microhybrid, with exclusively combustion-engined drive of the wheels, electric power trains, including the serial hybrid, with exclusively electromotive drive of the wheels and hybrid power trains with both types of drive. The development of hybrid power trains usually proceeds by evolving conventional transmissions to hybrid transmission systems. In order to upgrade a vehicle with conventional power train to a hybrid vehicle two problems have to be considered. On one hand the available package is limited and on the other hand additional functions need to be added to the control units to provide the special hybrid functions. For these conventional vehicles the e-machine(s) are integrated into existing transmissions or completely new transmissions need to be developed. Furthermore first vehicle applications are available on the market especially designed as hybrid vehicles. In particular hybrid vehicles with multispeed transmissions lead to enhanced requirements with respect to functional integration and thus rather complex software functions.
