In this paper, the energy optimal control theory proposed by the second author has been applied to the energy flow control of the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). From the objective function consisted of the virtual power and the dissipation energy of the system, the control law has been derived in which the vehicle follows the reference speed stably with minimum energy consumption. In this control law, by considering the energy efficiency functions of the motor and the engine, the driving with high energy efficiency is achieved. Though the energy efficiency functions are nonlinear, there is no need for the real-time solving of a differential equation which is needed for the traditional optimal control. Therefore the control law has less calculation and is easily implemented in a real-time controller. Besides, since the objective functions to be minimized are described in power form in which a negative value is allowed, not only the energy consumption will be minimized but also the effect of maximizing the energy regeneration by the motor is achieved. In the simulation of 10-mode driving, EOC yields the emergence control pattern in which the engine increases the torque during idling operation, and the motor stores the regenerated energy. As the result, the fuel cost has become 15% less than the rule based control (RBC) .
