The invention relates to an energy management control method for a hybrid electric vehicle. The method can ensure that energy consumption is lower under the condition that the vehicle is lack of electricity. The method comprises the steps of determining total torque required by a driver based on accelerator pedal opening; selecting an alternative torque discrete interval of the engine from a preset optimal efficiency torque interval of the engine based on the rotating speed of the engine; obtaining a motor alternative torque discrete interval based on the driver demand total torque and the engine alternative torque discrete interval; determining a power assembly alternative equivalent power loss discrete interval based on the engine alternative torque discrete interval, the motor alternative torque discrete interval, the engine rotating speed and the motor rotating speed; based on the vehicle speed and the delta(SOC), determining a corresponding equivalent factor from a pre-stored corresponding relation calibration table; determining a target engine torque and a target motor torque which enable the total energy consumption of the vehicle to be minimum based on the power assembly alternative equivalent power loss discrete interval and the equivalent factor, and outputting the target engine torque and the target motor torque to an engine control unit and a motor control unit for control.
