Hybrid drive systems with energy storage are ideal for city buses used in urban transport because of its frequent startstop operation, low average speed and power requirement. Compared to a conventional city bus fuel savings up to 30% can be achieved. In the paper different storage technologies are compared regarding their suitability for the city bus application. The newest ELFA® energy storage system based on double layer capacitor modules is presented.
