Power electronics has become an indispensable part of the electric system of conventional cars with combustion engine; for hybrid or electric cars it even is an enabling technology. In the following an overview of power semiconductor components is given which are suitable for the aforementioned applications, i. e., for use in the related low voltage or so-called high voltage system. Besides silicon and wide bandgap devices, packaging technology with its major influence on component behaviour and reliability is considered.
