This paper presents a bi-directional power converter for on-board use in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Electric Vehicles based on the typical European household circuit configuration. Additional to the ability to charge the traction battery at most European single phase mains socket, this power converter can feed active and reactive power back to the grid or supply a grid independent load. The power converter is designed to isolate galvanically the high-voltage system of the car from the mains. A short overview of design criteria for the selection of topologies and passive components are presented. The control of the ac current, dc-link voltage and battery power is shown with a control strategy to minimize the dc-link capacitor. Selected experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
