A gas main pipeline (GMP) is an expensive linearly-extended object that is difficult to maintain. The occurrence of some nonuniformity in the properties of an object, which depend on its dimensions, assumes special importance in the discussion of methods and volumes for the diagnostic inspections of linear sections (LSs) of GMPs. It is commonly recognized that the corrosion level of a metal gas pipeline that runs underground depends on a great number of factors associated with the features of soil and climatic conditions, the peculiarity of its construction and operation, its susceptibility to technogenic impacts, etc. Attempts at estimating the corrosion level by individual factors and parameters are not effective; therefore such an estimation must be conducted via the integrated analysis of as many factors and parameters as possible. In this paper a number of factors that influence the corrosion level of a metal gas pipeline in the ground are described. We consider the parameters that are used in the electrometric diagnostics of corrosion protection. The key requirements and the types of work on the organization of the corrosion inspections of OAO Gazprom's underground facilities are listed. As a result of an analysis of numerous works, we selected the most significant requirements. The real practical results of corrosion inspections were demonstrated.
