There is a growing market for driver assistance systems as railways face pressure to reduce operating costs, improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. A wide variety of energy saving systems is now available, but it is difficult to make meaningful comparisons, as they are often based on different computer models and algorithms which may be simplified or only apply under certain conditions driver advisory systems may be stand-alone or communicate with the traffic control centre. Some systems rely on fixed data relating to train formation, infrastructure profiles and/or timetables, whilst others take variable factors into consideration. The conceptual outlines of the new system were drawn up some time ago, before the necessary technologies were available, but these are now to hand and after a lot of work the concept has reached the production phase. Interoperability has always been seen as an important consideration. Being developed in association with infrastructure manager Trafikverket and mining company is the first driver assistance system to be designed to meet the interoperable energy efficient train operation standards. The system calculates speed curves dynamically and it includes a recovery function which can optimise the recommendations to suit such changing parameters. It will also compensate automatically for any failure by the driver to follow earlier advice. The on-train equipment may be integrated with other systems to provide enhanced performance make use of existing hardware.
