This work describes the concept of an automotive measurement and simulation system. The described system allows diagnosing and testing of vehicle functions which are based on sensors capturing the vehicles' surrounding. For current automotive measurement and simulation systems the test of safety or comfort functions is a challenging field since it is a key issue for an effective, and efficient quality assurance in automotive industry. Examples for these driver assistance functions are vehicles exchanging knowledge about road conditions or a system that warns drivers if an ambulance is approaching. In this case the so called Car2Car communication creates a wireless network among the vehicles involved. Another example of interacting vehicles is an adaptive cruise control application which is based on radar information about the preceding vehicle. The novel idea in this work is to record and later correlate the communication data on the vehicles' busses by using a common time base for the measurement units inside all involved vehicles. The communication on the busses will be recorded by independent measurement units. The correlation of the collected data will be done later by an analysis software. Additionally the system is able to simulate information from the vehicle's environment and feed the simulated data to the vehicle busses. As an example the information of the approaching ambulance car or of the preceding vehicle can be simulated and applied to the corresponding electronic control unit (ECU) within the vehicle under test. For applications based on one or more environment sensors an approach is shown which allows to replace the real sensor information by data of a simulated constellation of the vehicle under test within its surrounding. The key feature is to deliver the simulated data in a timely precise manner to the responsible ECUs in the vehicle. To fulfil the timing requirements by a non real-time operating system the concept of a time controlled sending mechanism is used. This mechanism additionally enables the introduced system to be used as an advanced I-/O-interface for PC based hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulators without using a real-time kernel.
