Currently available automotive Head-Up-Displays (HUD) are using the partially reflecting windshield to display specific information in front of the car by virtual imaging. In this contribution a binocular concept for true 3D HUDs is demonstrated based on two display units and two projecting optics. This setup creates two stereoscopic virtual images inside the drivers eyes via the windshield. We also discuss other commonly used stereoscopic concepts with respect to an application for future 3D HUDs. The software procedures to prepare the corresponding stereoscopic 3D images from navigation data are described and some results on our laboratory system are given. In order to get a stereoscopic three-dimensional display two (2D) images have to be prepared, one for the left and another one for the right eye. These images differ only by a slight lateral (i.e. angular) offset in order to account for the lateral human eye distance of about 60 mm. Notice that the 3D impression is caused by both, the lateral shift between both images AND the perspectively drawn object. In principle, we distinguish between anaglyphic and auto-stereoscopic display methods. To start with the first one, the two images are presented at the same display position but are optically coded by different color tables or perpendicular oriented optical polarization. The observer has to wear special eyeglasses with different optical filters or perpendicular oriented polarizers in order to separate the correct image for each eye.
