The first pilot trial of ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) Regional low-cost train control is due to become operational on the Västerdala line later this year, offering the prospect of significant savings and improved operational control for many secondary railways. Sweden is the first country to introduce ERTMS Regional, and the Västerdala line has been chosen as the pilot application. The 134 km single-track branch between Making and Repbäcken has six stations and is manually controlled by nine dispatchers at various locations. The line has no through traffic, and typically handles eight trains each way per day, both passenger and freight. Maximum speed is 100 km/h. In short, it is a typical example of a low-density line with ageing train control technology. The ERTMS Regional equipment was installed during 2009, but has not yet been connected to the trackside objects such as turnouts and level crossings. At present the object controllers are connected to simulated objects close to the real ones. This allows the technology to be tested in parallel with the existing traffic control system until Trafikverket and Bombardier are happy with its performance.
