Very small defects in multi-layered composite materials reinforced with graphite, carbon, glass and aramid fibers used in light composite armours were detected by nondestructive testing. The materials are used in some military applications to protect crews against small arm bullets and fragments. Typical defects in the materials consist in inadequate composite layer joints or their delaminations after impacts or hitting with bullets and fragments. The IR thermography was used to detect the defects differing in their thermal properties from the basic fiber-reinforced composite material. As subjects, some teflon-defected multilayer resin-matrix aramide and carbon fibers-reiforced materials were tested by using the reflection procedure (heat pulse 6.4 kJ during 5 ms or 3 kJ for 2.7 ms). The presence and sizes of the subsurface defects were determined.
