Model tests of wearing processes occurring in the rail sections subject to heat strengthening treatments were carried out. The tests were carried out with Amsler machine, by using different values of pressure and slip ratio within the range that allowed the real operating conditions to be reconstructed. After the model tests have been finished, the samples were subject to metallographic tests the aim of was to identify the wearing mechanisms. It was found out that they showed about three times higher resistance to the abrasive wear as compared to the material taken from the naturally cooled rails. The primary wearing mechanism was delamination, which were initiated in the privileged way along the boundaries of the former austenite grain, boundaries of pearlite colonies and grains, as well as on MnS.
