Low alloy manganese steel (pearlite/ferrite ratio 75/25) is used for making the locomotive wheel treads in Russia. Ultrasonic finishing of the treads results in an increase in the surface hardness of the tread steel and in an improvement of its abrasive and adhesive wear. The original surface roughness of the steel after machining (3rd class, 50 micrometer) becomes more smooth after the ultrasound treatment (5th class, 10 micrometer to 20 micrometer). To explain the nature of the structural changes, the treads treated with ultrasounds were studied by differential electron microscopy. The microhardness of the treads increased from 2860 MPa up to 6980 MPa on the surface and up to 6560 MPa at the distance 15 micrometer below the surface. The Vickers hardness increased from 285 HV up to 326 HV after the ultrasonic finishing. The friction coefficient decreased from 0.55 down to 0.47, the friction wear resistance increased by 1.7 times.
