This paper presents a longitudinal control algorithm for adaptive cruise control with collision avoidance (ACC/CA) in multiple vehicle traffic situations. The proposed algorithm consists of a multi-target estimator, a primary target selector and an adaptive cruise control system with collision avoidance. The multi-target tracking method is based on a kalman filter. The primary target selector decides an in-lane target and provides the information to an ACC/CA system in order to drive a subject vehicle smoothly in complex traffic situations. The performance and safety benefits of a multi-vehicle ACC/CA system is investigated via simulation using real driving data. Simulation results show that system response is more smooth and safe in multiple vehicle driving situations.
