In this article the authors present a systematic design for control and optimization of rear axle biased regenerative braking for hybrid electric vehicle. The controller consists of three main parts, a feedforward, a more classical feedback based on a modified PID and an optimizer consisting of an extremum seeking control. The proposed controller is relatively simple, nevertheless shows promising robust performance in both simulations and testing. The main idea of the control is approach is to maintain the wheel slip on the rear axle under a given threshold. This is done by using a combiniation of a precomputed feedforward, a feedback based on wheel slip and a extremum seeking control in order to maximize the braking on the rear axle. The control signal is the brake distribution between the front and rear axes, that is given a total brake torque desired by the driver, the controller allocates the optimal distribution between the front and rear axes.
