The factors directly influencing the wear of the wheel-rail couple and on the draw of the locomotives were discussed. In particular, the axle load, travelling speed and operational temperature have an influence on the friction coefficients of the locomotive wheels during run of the train. Tribological tests at an Amsler stand were performed to show the surface layer deformations and the wear (pitting) may occur depending on the rail steel quality (steel with or without thermal treatment). The effect of an anisotropic friction in the wheel-rail couple as well as of macro and micro slips on the deformations of layers was studied. The construction of bearings used in modern rail cars was taken into consideration. The necessity for temperature control was pointed out because of its substantial effect on the trip safety of the rail vehicles.
