Dargestellt wird der Aufbau zweier Testumgebungen zur Entwicklung von Fahrzeugsystemen, die das zukünftige europäische Satellitennavigationssystem Galileo verwenden. Hierzu werden Galileo-basierte Signale terrestrisch jeweils in ein Testgelände für Kraftfahrzeuge und eines für Schienenfahrzeuge eingespeist. Dadurch stehen einzigartige Entwicklungsumgebungen zur Verfügung, in denen entsprechende, auf Galileo basierende Sicherheits- und Fahrerassistenzsysteme entwickelt und in der Praxis getestet werden können. Diese Systeme können dann direkt mit dem Start des eigentlichen Galileo-Satellitensystems angeboten und eingesetzt werden. Die im Rahmen des Projekts ausgewählte Applikationen werden kurz vorgestellt.

    This paper introduces facilities for development and testing of vehicle systems which are based on the new upcoming European satellite navigation system GALILEO. Signals based on the Galileo standard will be provided terrestrially within two proofing grounds in the area of Aachen: one for automotive, the other for rail. The locations are called automotiveGATE and railGATE (GATE = Galileo Test Environment). Hence, a unique infrastructure is available where advanced driver assistant systems as well as security systems can be developed and tested. Thus, the systems will be ready for the market, in time with the launch of the real Galileo satellite system. With the development of innovative vehicle systems it is more and more important to include further information about the vehicle's current position and the upcoming road characteristics. However, the accuracy and the performance of today's GPS is insufficient to meet the requirements of safety functions, while the introduction of Galileo is promising real improvements. After the construction of the two GATES they will be tested and validated under real conditions. Therefore automotive and rail application projects have been started in parallel at RWTH Aachen University together with various partners from industry. Within these projects research and development - based on Galileo navigation positioning - will be carried out on various functions.
