Accident statistics show that the most common accident types involving motorcyclists are faulty behaviours of surrounding car drivers, underestimating motorbike dynamics or simply overlooking the small silhouette of motorbikes. In particular, right-of-way violations of car drivers at T- or Y-intersections with perpendicular paths of car and motorbike form a typical accident scenario. In these scenarios, the motorbike was mostly driving at a constant speed in a straight line. The main impact areas were the frontal and lateral areas of the motorbike. Motorbike-mounted sensors and signal processing, tracking, and classification algorithms can be used to detect possibly dangerous driving situations at intersections. This paper investigates in which scenarios a warning of the motorbike rider based on this information would be helpful to avoid the accident, or at least mitigate its severeness by lowering the impact energy.
