How can traffic authorities deal with vehicle growth in cities with limited infrastructures? This paper presents a solution to optimize infrastructure sensors already installed in cities, focusing in the case of a laser scanner, facing the problem in two ways: in one hand by developing sensors able to provide more accurate and valuable traffic parameters and in other hand by endowing it with intelligence. These innovations introduce a cooperative approach addressed towards a new generation of sensors able to cooperate and communicate. The detection system used is a laser scanner, which provides information in real-time about: detection (presence), flow rate, counting and vehicle classification. The classification has been done according to statistical methods in five groups (5+1): powered two-wheeler, passenger car, van, truck and bus.
